Hyundai of Tempe Report: One in Four Americans Can’t Afford to Fix Their Cars

September 7, 2011 by , under Dealership News, Hyundai Service.

Cheap Car Repair, Tempe, Arizona

A new survey by AAA reveals that one quarter of American drivers have neglected car repairs and maintenance in the past 12 months due to the economy, with more than half keeping their old car to avoid the financial burden of purchasing a new model.

Skipping regular maintenance schedules and putting off “insignificant” car repairs may seem like a temporary solution when you’re strapped for cash, but it can actually cost you more money in the long run. Neglecting either of these can greatly increase the likelihood of the car needing a costly, major repair. Yet, according to the AAA survey, one in four American drivers would not be able to pay for a car repair of $2,000 if faced with one today, and one in eight would be unable to pay for a repair bill of $1,000.

“Economic conditions have taken their toll on many Americans resulting in them neglecting their cars and leaving them at increased risk for very expensive repair bills,” said Marshall L. Doney, AAA Vice President, Automotive and Financial Services. “Many Americans rely on their cars for their livelihood and losing access to them could be financially devastating during an already troubling economic time.

“It’s important for drivers to not only continue to maintain their vehicles, but also have a financial emergency plan in place should they be faced with a sudden unexpected auto repair bill,” continued Doney.

Unfortunately, a $1,000 or $2,000 or higher car repair bill can quickly appear — especially on older vehicles that have not been properly maintained. While repair costs can vary greatly by make, model and type of repair, a transmission repair can be $2,000 to $4,000, while an engine repair can exceed $5,000. Major brake repairs may range from $350 to $1,000, and a new set of tires can run from $300 to more than $1,000.

Hyundai of Tempe’s Top Summer Travel Tips

A summer road trip is the perfect way to beat the heat and get out of Dodge for a much-needed break. Here are the Top 5 Tips to help you save gas and stay safe on the road from the car service experts at Hyundai of Tempe.

Summer Travel Tip #1: Check Your Oil and Filter

Fresh filters help provide better fuel economy, smoother running and optimum power. In fact, replacing your car’s clogged air filter can help improve acceleration time by 6% to 11%. You can also improve your gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent by using the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil. Check your oil and filter regularly, and especially before a long road trip.

Summer Travel Tip #2: Check Your Tires

Did you know you can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent just by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure? Under-inflated tires, on the other hand, can lower gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires also contribute to a smoother ride and handling. To extend tire life and help ensure uneven tire wear doesn’t leave you stranded roadside, rotate your car’s tires every 6,000 to 7,500 miles.

Summer Travel Tip #3: Check Your Cooling System

A properly functioning cooling system is critical to engine operation, especially in the blazing Arizona heat. Frequently check your cooling system and hose connections for leaks, damage or looseness.

Summer Travel Tip #4: Check Your Air Conditioning System

No one wants to get stuck on a long summer road trip without air conditioning, so make sure you have your air conditioning system checked for refrigerant leaks, hose conditions and efficient operation before you depart. Also, consider turning the air conditioning off every now and then and rolling down the windows instead. Studies show that running your car’s air conditioner on “Max” can reduce MPG by roughly 5 to 25% compared to not using it.

Summer Travel Tip #5: Get a Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection

Of course, all of these summer travel tips can be performed yourself, but your best bet to ensure you don’t miss a thing is to take advantage of Hyundai of Tempe’s Multi-point Vehicle Inspection. Our Hyundai-trained technicians will perform a thorough, multi-point inspection of your Hyundai, paying special attention to safety and maintenance items.

Arizona Ranked #1 Most Expensive State for Vehicle Repairs

July 8, 2011 by , under Hyundai Service.

check engine light

As if you didn’t dread the “check engine” light enough, Arizona has just topped the list as the most expensive state in the country when it comes to auto repairs.

A new report from CarMD called the Vehicle Health Index shows that in 2010, drivers in Arizona paid the most in the nation for car repairs at an average cost of $421.39. Arizona’s #1 ranking on the CarMD Vehicle Health Index is 18% ore than the U.S. average for overall costs and 23% more for parts.

So why do Arizona drivers pay more for “check engine” light repairs? Because our warm, dry climate wreaks havoc on the longevity of car’s parts and can lead to expensive repairs to fix problems relating to dry air and residue from airborne dust.

The CarMD report isn’t intended to make you feel depressed about getting your car repaired in Arizona, though.

“We are releasing this data to empower consumers and technicians with a better understanding of common repairs and costs, and to call attention to the fact that, regardless of region, drivers who follow a regularly scheduled maintenance program and address small problems early tend to have reduced fuel bills and repair costs,” said Art Jacobsen, vice president of CarMD.com Corporation. “That said, if you live in a state with harsh weather conditions such as Arizona’s heat or North Dakota’s cold, it’s imperative to take care of your car to avoid catastrophic vehicle failures.”

Hyundai Car Care Tips

April 7, 2011 by , under Hyundai Service.

Hyundai interior

April is National Car Care Month, the perfect time of year to give your Hundai a little TLC. Basic maintenance can go a long way toward improving the safety and dependability of your car – not to mention avoiding costly repairs down the road.

“Neglected vehicle care almost always means much higher costs down the line in the form of more extensive repairs or lost resale value,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Chances are if you own a car, it needs some work. National Car Care Month in April is the perfect time to focus on your vehicle’s maintenance needs.”

Give your Hyundai a much-needed annual checkup with these 10 basic maintenance procedures to keep your vehicle operating at its best. Our friendly, highly-trained Hyundai Service Department will be happy to do it for you.

• Check the oil, filters and fluids. Oil should be checked at every fill-up and changed per the owner’s manual recommended intervals. Brake, transmission, power steering, coolant and windshield washer fluids should also be checked regularly. Your car’s filters, including those for the transmission, fuel system and interior ventilation, need regular inspection and replacement.

• Inspect hoses at each oil change and have them replaced when leaking, brittle, cracked, rusted, swollen or restricted. Check V-belts and serpentine belts for looseness and condition, and have them replaced when cracked, frayed, glazed or showing signs of excessive wear. Typically replace the timing belt between 60,000 and 90,000 miles or the interval specified in the owner’s manual to avoid a breakdown or serious engine damage.

• Check the engine brake system every year and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change.

• Check that the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free. The battery should be securely mounted. If it is three years old or more, the battery should be tested and replaced if necessary.

• Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay.

• Schedule a tune-up that will help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions.

• Check the car’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons, such as defrosting.

• Inspect the steering and suspension system annually, including shock absorbers and struts, and chassis parts, such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components.

• Check the pressure of all tires, including the spare, at least once a month. Check the tread for uneven or irregular wear and cuts and bruises along the sidewalls. Have your car’s alignment checked at least annually to reduce tire wear and improve fuel economy and handling.

• Test exterior and interior lights and have bulbs that are not working checked immediately. Replace windshield wiper blades every six months or when cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering for optimum wiping performance and safety.

Fuel Economy 101

February 25, 2011 by , under Dealership News, Hyundai Service, Uncategorized.

If you’ve noticed gas prices going up and are looking for ways to scale down your fuel consumption, there are a few different ways to combat gas-guzzling.  Even if you don’t own a Hybrid, you can lower your fuel usage through good regular car maintenance and better driving habits.

The best thing you could possibly do to keep your car running efficiently is to stick to your recommended maintenance schedule.  Simple oil and filter changes can keep your engine parts running more smoothly, cutting down on friction which causes the engine to work harder, i.e. burn more fuel.  Whenever you have your oil changed, be sure that the filter is replaced too.  A dirty oil filter can hold up to a quart of dirty oil, causing a loss of efficiency.  Checking your tire pressure often can also help keep your vehicle fuel-friendly.  In addition to these easy maintenance routines, other items to check on regularly are your vehicle’s spark plugs, the air filter element and the thermostat.  Making sure these components are in good working order will ensure your vehicle is running at its peak performance, giving you the best possible gas-mileage.
